On December 18, the Village of Skokie learned that it was subject to a cybersecurity incident impacting its computer network (see Dec. 22 article
). The Village’s IT Division took immediate action and launched an investigation, engaging third-party cybersecurity professionals.
The Village of Skokie takes cybersecurity and data security very seriously, understanding that cybersecurity incidents have become all too common of an occurrence among organizations nationwide. Since learning of this incident, the Village’s IT team has worked diligently with contracted experts to understand its scope, implement backup systems, enhance security measures, and carry out a phased and prioritized response and recovery plan.
Following that prioritized approach, the Village systematically restored the majority of impacted online services and applications over the course of several days and weeks. The Village’s 911 emergency phone system, email system, and the Village website, skokie.org, were not impacted.
There is no indication that resident data was accessed as part of this incident. Should the Village’s investigation determine personal information was compromised, the Village will notify any affected individuals via U.S. mail as soon as reasonably possible.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Village appreciates the public’s patience and understanding and will share further updates as more information is available.
