After a yearlong review that included extensive research and outreach to Chicago-area Native communities, a Village committee unanimously recommended that Skokie design a new Village seal for use on official documents and materials, replacing the current seal featuring Native imagery that has been used since the late 1940s.

Submit Village Seal Design Qualifications

The Village Seal Committee is seeking interested artists and designers knowledgeable of Native communities in Skokie and the Great Lakes region to develop design concepts for a new Village seal honoring Skokie’s past, present and future.

The Committee recently extended the deadline for individuals and firms to submit their qualifications for Village seal design services to Friday, November 17, 2023. View the Request for Qualifications (PDF) and please share it with those who might be interested.

Explore Skokie’s Rich History

As part of efforts to develop a new Village seal honoring Skokie's past, present and future, and in recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day on October 9, 2023, community members are encouraged to explore the history of the Native people who inhabited the area that is now Skokie.

  • Skokie: A Centennial History details the history of the Village of Skokie (formerly Niles Centre) from 1888 to 1988, and begins with a chapter on Skokie’s origins and the Native communities that originally inhabited the area.
  • The Skokie Public Library offers digital and print collections and resources exploring Skokie’s early days as a Potawatomi settlement to the diverse suburb that it is today.
  • The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian promotes a greater understanding of Indigenous peoples and serves as a space to celebrate their diverse cultures, rich histories, and present-day experiences and contributions.
  • The Skokie Heritage Museum offers a variety of exhibits, classes and educational programs.
