[ARCHIVED] Electoral Referendums Meeting, Oct. 10

Electoral Referendums Meeting map viewing

The Village of Skokie will host a public meeting on Tuesday, October 10 to present community members with a proposed electoral district map and implementation plan for three citizen-initiated referendums impacting future Skokie Village Board elections.

Approved by voters in November 2022, the three referendums changed Skokie Village Board elections to non-partisan, staggered terms for elected officials, and established hybrid representation through the creation of four geographic districts represented by one trustee each and two at-large trustee representatives. Currently, all Skokie trustees are elected at-large.

The Village is actively engaging residents in the referendums implementation process to ensure community members’ voices are heard and input is considered. On September 11, the Village held a meeting to present three draft electoral district maps and a draft implementation plan for community review and input. At its next meeting on October 10, following an extensive community engagement process, the Village’s mapping expert, Peter Creticos, Ph.D., as well as attorneys Jason Guisinger and Scott Uhler of Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins (KTJ), will present a proposed implementation plan and electoral district map inclusive of the public feedback the Village has received.

The meeting will be held:

Tuesday, October 10, 7 p.m.
Skokie Public Library, Petty Auditorium
5215 Oakton St., Skokie

Hearing assistance devices will be available as needed for audience members attending the meeting in person. The meeting will also be streamed live on the Village’s YouTube channel.

Meeting Materials

The October 10 meeting agenda and materials, including a proposed map and implementation plan, will be available at skokie.org/electoralreferendums on Tuesday, October 3. Web page information can be translated into more than 100 languages using the Google Translate "select language" tool at the bottom of the page.

Provide Your Input

Community members can review the three draft electoral district maps and draft implementation plan presented at the September 11 meeting at skokie.org/electoralreferendums. Community members are encouraged to review the materials and provide their input by Wednesday, September 27 to ensure that their feedback can be considered prior to releasing the proposed map and implementation plan on October 3.

Comments can be provided:

In addition to the meeting on September 11, the Village held an initial public meeting on August 14 to provide residents with an overview of the three referendums and the district mapping process, and produced a 10-minute video sharing districting principles and an overview of the draft maps.
