[ARCHIVED] Rebate Available for Approved Compost Bins

Hand adding compost to backyard container

Looking to reduce organic waste sent to the landfill and build richer soil in your backyard? Composting is a win-win!

In addition to the Village’s free food scrap drop-off sites and new customer discount for curbside composting through Collective Resources Compost, the Village also offers a $25 rebate for approved backyard compost containers.

What is an approved container?

Because food scraps in compost bins can attract rodents and other pests, compost containers must meet the following specifications:

  • Be sealed on all sides
  • Contain holes no larger than one quarter of an inch
  • Be placed in a rear yard and at least five feet away from side yard lot lines
  • Be properly maintained to prevent pest infestation and odors
  • Be located in an R1 or R2 single-family residential zoning district for the benefit of the owner/occupant of the residence

What materials can I compost in my backyard?

Materials acceptable for backyard composting include landscape waste, such as grass clippings, leaves and twigs, and food scraps, such as vegetables, fruit peels, egg shells, coffee grounds, and tea leaves. Meat, dairy products, bones, grease and oils are not permissible for backyard composting.

Is open composting allowed?

No. Open compost piles are not permitted, as these can provide an easily accessible food source for rodents and other pests.

I bought an approved container – how can I get a rebate?
That’s great! Please complete the Skokie Public Works compost bin reimbursement form
