The combination of high humidity and air temperatures predicted to hit the high 90s means it could feel as warm as 115 degrees over the next few days. An excessive heat warning has been issued through late Thursday for an area of Northeastern Illinois that includes Skokie. Protect yourself
- Stay in air conditioning during the hottest hours of the day. If you do not have access to air conditioning, Skokie offers several cooling centers (PDF) that are open to the public.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that reflects heat and sunlight.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Do not wait until you feel thirsty.
- Avoid unnecessary sun exposure or strenuous outdoor activities between the peak heat times of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Watch for warning signs
- Body temperature over 103 degrees Fahrenheit
- Difficulty breathing
- An elevated heart rate
- Skin hot to the touch
- Feeling dizziness, nausea, or disorientation
If you or someone you know is experiencing the above symptoms, call 911 immediately. While waiting for medical assistance to arrive, place ice packs on the person’s neck and underarms and have them drink cool water to lower their body temperature.
