The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) collected the first West Nile virus (WNV) positive mosquito batch in Skokie on July 10. This year, WNV positive mosquitoes have also been found in NSMAD traps in Evanston, Glenview, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove and Northfield. Please visit the NSMAD website to see the most current test results.
Protect yourself
While the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time, the NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including:
- Use insect repellent containing ingredients like DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin
- Wear long sleeves, pants, and socks, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, providing an additional physical barrier
- Install screens on windows and doors to further reduce the risk of mosquito bites
- Eliminate standing water sources around your home. Emptying and cleaning containers regularly can significantly decrease mosquito populations in residential areas.
By incorporating these preventive measures into your daily routines, you can minimize the chances of mosquito bites and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Contact the NSMAD for assistance with any mosquito related issues you may be experiencing.
