As summer approaches, keep these energy saving tips in mind to stay cool, save money, and help the environment.
- Use a ceiling fan to help your air conditioner move cool air around the house.
- Turn off the air conditioning and open your windows on cool evenings and when temperatures are mild.
- Dial your thermostat up by five degrees when leaving home for more than three hours, and consider enrolling in ComEd’s Peak Time Savings program.
- Keep air ducts and vents clean and clear. Don’t block the cool air from getting to you.
- Close your curtains and shades daily by 9 a.m. – especially for windows facing south or west.
- Install awnings or plant trees and shrubs to block direct sun rays.
- Weatherize your home: Use caulk and weather-stripping to seal up gaps and cracks, especially around windows and doors.
- Replace incandescent bulbs in high-use areas with Compact Fluorescent or LED bulbs.
- Schedule a Free Home Energy assessment at ComEd.com/Assessment or by calling 855-433-2700.
- Make sure windows and shades are energy efficient. Upgrading to ENERGY STAR-qualified windows, installing storm windows, or installing interior cellular shades can reduce heating and cooling costs. Look for the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) energy improvement label or search AERC’s qualified product list.
