Village staff throughout the organization have been hard at work implementing the strategies of the updated Skokie Environment Sustainability Plan, which aims to reduce communitywide Greenhouse Gas emissions by 35 percent from 2020 levels by 2030, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
A few of the accomplishments from the last quarter include:
- Supporting solar energy by creating a solar-ready checklist for properties and committing to a three-day turnaround time for solar permits
- Incentivizing composting by providing free drop-off sites and securing a 15 percent new customer discount for Collective Resource Compost’s curbside program
- Allocating funding to increase tree plantings by 75 percent in Fiscal Year 2024
- Sharing technical resources with Skokie’s top 25 water users
- Updating the Village’s Beautification Awards program to support sustainable landscaping practices
