On March 21, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky presented Mayor Van Dusen with a check for $2 million to go towards lead water service line replacements throughout the community. These funds were made available thanks to her request for Community Project Funding.
The Illinois Lead Service Line Replacement and Notification Act, which became effective in early 2022, bans partial lead water service line replacements to provide the public with protections against the harmful effects of lead in drinking water. It is estimated that the total cost of the project to the Village will be upwards of $80 million. At present, the Village of Skokie is developing a plan to equitably support these mandated lead service line replacements throughout the community that will be phased in over a multi-year period.
