Review the Village's next Environmental Sustainability Plan.
The Skokie Village Board will hold a special meeting on Monday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. to review and discuss the Village’s next Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP). The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the first floor Council Chambers at Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton Street.
ESP development began in May 2022, with involvement from a 33-person planning team of community members and Village staff led by Minneapolis-based environmental consulting firm paleBluedot, LLC. Hundreds of other Skokie residents also took the time to participate in surveys as well as review and provide comments on the preliminary ESP released in late September. Sincere thanks to the planning team, Village staff and residents who participate in the ESP development.
At the November 14 special Village Board meeting, the ESP will be reviewed and discussed. Among the items for consideration is eliminating twice-weekly refuse collection in favor of a single weekly refuse collection and providing enhanced options for compostable materials such as food, paper and other types of organic waste. The meeting agenda also includes presentations by:
- Jim McNelis, Vice Chair of the Sustainable Environmental Advisory Commission, on the Commission's recommendations regarding food scrap composting, increased communications, hiring a sustainability staff person and reducing refuse collection from twice weekly to once weekly
- Max Slankard, Public Works Director, regarding food scrap composting, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, municipal fleet inventory and electric vehicle transition
- Liz Zimmerman, Assistant to the Public Works Director, regarding refuse toter usage and capacity, recycling study and communications update
- Johanna Nyden, Community Development Director, regarding Community Development initial opportunities including existing and future buildings
In addition, the ESP will be further reviewed and discussed at the regular Village Board meeting on November 21, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. at Skokie Village Hall.
