Urgent Safety Message From the Skokie Fire Department

The Skokie Fire Department would like to remind all residents and property managers of the importance of checking that all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working condition. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be tested monthly and if not working, batteries or the entire unit must be replaced. During early January 2022, the fire service across the United States has experienced a large increase in structural fires that have been deadly for both occupants and firefighters. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors allow for early detection and warning of the occupants.

The Skokie Fire Department also suggests having a family meeting to discuss EDITH Drills (Exit Drills in the Home) and remind children not to play with matches and lighters.

Finally, residents are reminded that now is a good time to remove Christmas trees from the home to reduce fire risk. The Village of Skokie has a Christmas tree recycling program in effect through January 22, 2022; click here for Christmas tree recycling program details.
