[ARCHIVED] Message from the Skokie Police Department

Skokie Police Department Facebook Masthead (JPG)

The Skokie Police Department is focused on building, strengthening, and maintaining long-term relationships with the community we serve. It is critical that we work with the community. We embrace our entire community and share in everyone’s concerns. For a number of years, the Skokie Police Department command staff has mandated that all personnel participate in annual training on non-discriminatory policing practices and the appropriate use of force. In June 2018, the Skokie Police Department adopted the Ten Shared Principles Resolution to bridge the gap between the police and the community, an excerpt from which includes:

  1. We value the life of every person and consider life to be the highest value.
  2. All persons should be treated with dignity and respect. This is another foundational value.
  3. We reject discrimination toward any person that is based on race, ethnicity, religion, color, nationality, immigrant status, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or familial status.

During this time, the Skokie Police Department is diligently patrolling the neighborhoods and business districts to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. We have adjusted police personnel staffing has been enhanced to ensure the Department’s ability to assist the community during this uncertain time.

We also are working with surrounding communities, Cook County Sheriff’s Police, the Illinois State Police, Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, and the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System to prepare for multiple scenarios.

The Skokie Police Department is aware of several social media postings calling for people to commit criminal acts. We are monitoring several informational sources, including the State Terrorism Intelligence Center, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Information Center, the Chicago Police Department’s Crime Prevention Intelligence Center and other regional sources.

The Skokie Police Department is taking additional measures to ensure your safety and preservation of property. Please help us by:

  • Avoiding being a victim of a crime of opportunity – secure your valuables
  • When out in the public, remain aware of your surroundings
  • Report suspicious activity, “If You See Something, Say Something,” and dial 9-1-1

The women and men of the Skokie Police Department will continue to serve our community with integrity and respect for all.
