At this year’s Backlot Bash, the Village of Skokie and Skokie Park District partnered with Collective Resource Inc., a local company that specializes in composting and zero waste events, to reduce the environmental impact of the Bash. With the help of more than 20 community volunteers over the three-day event, .74 tons of organic waste was diverted from going to a landfill. This organic waste is currently being composted and turned into healthy soil for future use. An entire dumpster of clean, non-contaminated recyclables was also provided to Lakeshore Recycling Systems, Skokie’s recycling contractor. In total, Skokie volunteers sorted through roughly 2/3 of the total waste of the event, an impressive feat considering the magnitude and number of people at the event.
