Human Services - Immigrant Services

The Village of Skokie values its culturally diverse community.  The Village hosted an International Leadership Academy in late-2009 for immigrant residents who wanted to learn about taking on a greater community leadership role through volunteerism, service on a board or commission or as an elected official.  Click here for details from that event.   The Village will likely host another Academy in the coming year.

The Village of Skokie recently printed an Immigrant Services Directory with information on area services and programs for the international community.  The Skokie Police Department hosts an International Youth Police Academy each summer, and also an International Citizen Academy during the year to acquaint the international community with community policing, the crime unit, canine unit, crime prevention and more.

The Village partners with other community organizations on a number of programs for the international community, including the annual Skokie Festival of Cultures, a two-day, outdoor festival held each May that celebrates Skokie's diversity with ethnic entertainment, displays, food and much more.  The Village also supports the Niles Township ELL Parent Center where students and their families can get support with literacy and English as a second language classes along with a wide variety of other support services and programs.  The Center is located at 9440 North Kenton Avenue; for information contact 847/568-7611.
