Board of Fire and Police Commissioners

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners of the Village of Skokie derives its power and authority from the Illinois Municipal Code, the Illinois Compiled Statutes as amended from time to time and from the Village of Skokie under its Home Rule powers.

The goals of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are as follows:

  1. To recruit, select and appoint qualified candidates to fill vacancies for original appointment in the Fire and Police Departments as prescribed by the Skokie Board of Fire and Police Commission Rules and Regulations, State Statute and local ordinances.
  2. To provide testing and selection procedures to allow qualified employees to participate in the promotional success for the positions of Lieutenant in the Fire Department and the position of Sergeant in the Police Department.
  3. To conduct all original appointment and promotional selection procedures fairly and in adherence with all local, state and federal laws.
  4. To conduct disciplinary hearings or appeals of disciplinary action by uniformed personnel in the Fire and Police Departments or to hear the presentation of charges by the Chiefs of these departments.

Police Officer Recruitment (As of 11/16)

Minimum 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at the date of the written examination; U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.; High School Diploma or equivalent AND at least ONE of the following: Minimum sixty (60) college semester hours from an accredited institution by the application deadline date, OR four (4) years of active military service with an Honorable Discharge by the application deadline date; Possess a valid Driver's License; Proof of completion of the Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report  (POWER) test with attainment date less than six (6) months prior to the date of the written examination; Complete a ride along with a Village of Skokie Police Officer; Compliance with Skokie Police Department Appearance Policy, specifically Article IV (Tattoos/Branding/Intentional Scarification/Body Art and Mutilation/Body Piercing); Have correctable vision to 20/20 and have the ability to distinguish colors; Within 24 months from hire, reside in Cook, Lake or DuPage County in Illinois; Enter into a “Candidate Reimbursement Agreement”, an "Authorization for Release of Personal Information Agreement”, an “Abstinence from Tobacco Products Agreement”, and an "Employment of Relatives Agreement”; must have ability to comprehend the English Language (written and spoken).

Firefighter Recruitment (As of 11/16)

Minimum 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at the date of the written exam unless previous full-time Firefighter in IL, as noted under statute (65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6.3); U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.; High School Diploma or equivalent AND at least ONE of the following: Minimum sixty (60) college semester hours from an accredited institution OR State of IL Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter Certification issued by the OSFM OR Four (4) years of active military service with an Honorable Discharge by the date of the written examination; Possess a valid Driver's License; Proof of completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) AND proof of passing the Ladder Climb Test, with an attainment date less than six (6) months prior to the written examination; Have correctable vision to 20/20 and have the ability to distinguish colors; Within 12 months from hire, reside in one of the following counties in Illinois: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry or Will OR Lake County in Indiana OR Kenosha County in Wisconsin; Enter into a “Candidate Reimbursement Agreement”, an "Authorization for Release of Personal Information Agreement”, an “Abstinence from Tobacco Products Agreement”, and an "Employment of Relatives Agreement” ; must have ability to comprehend the English Language (written and spoken).
